SharePoint 2013: Setting up User Profile Connection Filter

After you set up a Synchronization Connection, you can set up filters to exclude things like service accounts and accounts that are not active.

To get to this setting, you have to navigate to  Manage Profile Service -> Configure Synchronization Connections.  On that page, hover over the connection, then choose Edit Connection Filters in the drop-down.

When you are adding multiple filters, make sure you choose the radio button "Any apply (OR)" option.  If not, all of the conditions you set up must be true for the filter to work.

Examples

Filter out disabled accounts:
Attribute: userAccountControl and Is present.  Wait.  (Options will appear)
In the Operator drop-down, choose Bit on equals.  In the filter box, type 2.  Click on Add.  (it can take awhile)

Filter accounts with passwords that never expire:
Attribute: userAccountControl and Is present.  Wait.  (Options will appear)
In the Operator drop-down, choose Bit on equals.  In the filter box, type 17.  Click on Add.  (it can take awhile)

Filter out non-user accounts:
Attribute: objectCategory and Is present.  Wait.  (Options will appear)
In the Operator drop-down, choose Does not equal.  In the filter box, type person.  Click on Add.  (it can take awhile)
